The Educational Baristas

wendy s. peterson

As a fourth generation teacher in Arizona, I am grateful for those who paved my way, including my parents, my grandmother, and my great-grandmother, all of whom graduated from Arizona State University. Clearly, my calling to educate is in my blood, and I’m proud to continue our family legacy.

My career began in 1986 in Mesa. I had no idea what I was doing. I’ve offered a “refund” to students from those first years, but they’ve insisted one is not needed. What I know is that I loved them, but I had no idea how to actually teach them. Thankfully, my family and mentors patiently helped me learn to teach. Perhaps because of this, my desire to assist educators developed. At first, this was an informal pursuit; teachers came to my classroom for advice, to share their woes and triumphs, and to seek guidance. Eventually, I was chosen as my school’s Instructional Specialist, a role similar to a coach, and I began my formal journey to strengthen education for ALL students; this is my mission.

My biggest cheerleader and support, my beloved husband, Ernie, unexpectedly passed in March 2018. He loved watching me teach teachers and was adept at helping me collate, staple, and load up boxes. I’m a stepmom to our three adult children and nana to our three charming, adorable granddaughters who’ve given me even greater focus and commitment.

When I’m not working (which isn’t often), I enjoy several past times, including cooking, baking, writing, and reading. Additionally, I have a passion for musical theatre, sampling new restaurants, and beach combing. “My” place is Oregon’s northern coast, so I’m grateful to visit each year and hope—someday—to retire to what I consider the most perfect slice of heaven on earth.

With my colleagues and friends, Julia and Brit, I’m thrilled to be an “educational barista,” bringing what I’ve learned in nearly 40 years in education to teachers everywhere.
